American Airlines Introduces Complimentary Wi-Fi for AAdvantage Members

Gone are the days of shelling out extra cash for Wi-Fi on American Airlines flights–at least for some lucky passengers. The airline recently introduced a game-changing perk for AAdvantage members starting this January 6, offering complimentary Wi-Fi on its narrowbody planes and two-class regional jets. This upgrade will be expanded to nearly all flights later this spring, according to American Airlines.

To access the free Wi-Fi, travelers simply need to log in using their AAdvantage number and password on the aainflight.com portal and select “Free Wi-Fi” to start browsing. Joining the AAdvantage loyalty program is free and allows customers to earn miles for perks like priority boarding, upgrades, and award travel.

“This is a monumental moment for American Airlines as we celebrate a century of innovation, including being the first to introduce a loyalty program and airport lounge,” said Heather Garboden, American’s Chief Customer Officer. “Free high-speed Wi-Fi is not just a bonus–it is a necessity for today’s travelers. We are proud to roll out this new offering, sponsored by AT&T, across the majority of our fleet. Once fully implemented, every AAdvantage member can stay connected, stream, and share while on the go at no extra cost.”

While many fans on American’s official Instagram page enthusiastically embraced this news, expressing their excitement with comments like “this is the BEST news!” and celebratory emojis, the sentiment on other social media platforms was not as universally positive. Flight Drama, an aviation news Instagram page, saw comments flooding in from passengers who felt that the airline should have provided this perk sooner.

“Finally! Because paying $25 a flight was ridiculous,” one commenter vented, echoing the sentiments of others who deemed the update long overdue. Concerns were also raised about refunds for passengers who had already paid for Wi-Fi in advance. “I pay monthly for the service because it’s cheaper than per flight. I wonder if they will notify me that I no longer have to pay,” one passenger questioned.

As Spirit Airlines recently announced cuts to flights in 11 cities, American’s move to provide free Wi-Fi is a refreshing change that will undoubtedly be well-received by travelers seeking a more seamless and connected experience in the air.
