A Weekend Escape to Point Pleasant: Exploring a Hidden Gem on the Jersey Shore

Growing up in Philadelphia, my family’s summers were spent soaking up the sun in South New Jersey’s shore points, particularly in Wildwood and Cape May. As a child, I couldn’t fathom why the show Jersey Shore didn’t feature these beach havens. Fast forward to today, my husband and I have settled in a more central New Jersey town closer to the northern beaches.

One day, on a whim, we took our 5-year-old son to Point Pleasant for a beach day trip. To our surprise, the boardwalk there was a smaller, more manageable version of the ones we grew up frequenting. It felt like a hidden gem.

Currently, Point Pleasant’s Jenkinson’s Boardwalk is in the running for Reader’s Choice: America’s Best Boardwalk on USA Today. In my opinion, it definitely deserves a top spot.

The beach and boardwalk at Point Pleasant offer an experience like no other. While purchasing beach tags may be a point of contention for some, I appreciate the effort in keeping the beaches pristine.

Jenkinson’s Boardwalk is a vibrant mix of residential and commercial areas, offering a plethora of fun activities for visitors.

Amusements at the boardwalk range from bumper cars to a spinning coaster, catering to all ages. The small amusement park exudes a charming carnival atmosphere.

Arcades line the boardwalk, providing endless entertainment for families. Despite the crowds, there is always something for everyone to enjoy.

Mini golfing at Point Pleasant is a beloved tradition for my family. Whether you choose Lighthouse Point Mini Golf or Castaway Cove Mini Golf, both options offer a fantastic time. The Castaway Cove course aboard a “shipwreck” provides a unique and shaded experience.

Jenkinson’s Aquarium may be small, but it is packed with exotic fish, playful penguins, and adorable seals, making it a must-visit attraction on the boardwalk.

In addition to the attractions, Point Pleasant’s boardwalk houses numerous shops and eateries to satisfy all tastes. Off-season visits offer a more relaxed experience without the tourist crowds.

The boardwalk hosts seasonal events with great deals for families, like free rounds of mini golf for dads on Father’s Day. Unlike the bustling boards of Wildwood, Point Pleasant’s family-focused atmosphere makes it an ideal seaside getaway, especially for those with young children.

Point Pleasant may not have the same epic feel as Wildwood, but its family-friendly vibe and array of activities make it a charming destination for a weekend escape by the sea.
