A Seltzer Connoisseur’s Journey: Exploring Polar’s Sparkling Waters

In the world of sparkling water enthusiasts, some take their bubbly beverages very seriously. Whether debating bubble size, can versus bottle, or flavor profiles, these connoisseurs know their seltzer. Growing up in a family that falls into this second category, I have fond memories of sipping on fizzy glasses of seltzer. From Vintage brand bottles to Polar, my family’s love for sparkling water runs deep.

As a dedicated Polar fan, I have even ordered cases of it when I moved away from Worcester, Massachusetts, the home of Polar, to Chicago. What sets Polar apart for me is not just the cute bear mascot (Orson) or the fun flavors like Unicorn Kisses, but the fact that it remains family-owned and operated by the Crowley family since 1882.

Recently, I had the opportunity to taste test Polar’s 21 core flavors with my family. As we gathered around the kitchen table, we sampled each flavor and ranked them from worst to best. Through this tasting experience, I delved into the world of seltzer in a whole new way, appreciating the nuances of each flavor.

In the quest to understand the differences between seltzer in a bottle versus a can, I turned to America’s Test Kitchen Senior Science Research Editor Paul Adams for insight. He explained how packaging can impact carbonation retention and ultimately influence flavor perception. This revelation added a new layer to our tasting experience, enhancing our appreciation for the nuances of each sip.

As we tested each flavor, we found ourselves gravitating towards Polar’s signature larger CO₂ bubbles. The sharp and assertive fizz of these bubbles appealed to our seltzer preferences, distinguishing Polar from other brands with finer bubbles. Our family discussion and ranking of the flavors revealed surprises, disappointments, and one clear winner that quickly earned a spot in our fridge.

From classic flavors like Lemon to more adventurous blends like Georgia Peach, each Polar seltzer offered a unique experience. Whether savoring the nostalgic notes of a Creamsicle in Orange Vanilla or enjoying the boldness of Black Cherry, we appreciated the artistry behind each flavor profile. In the end, it was the Pink Apple & Lemon that emerged as the clear favorite, capturing the essence of an orchard-fresh experience in a can.

Through this tasting journey, we gained a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship and creativity that goes into crafting Polar seltzer flavors. Each can offered a glimpse into the world of sparkling water innovation, inviting us to explore new taste sensations and savor the effervescent joy of Polar’s bubbly creations.
