Rob McElhenny and Kaitlin Olson may bicker as coworkers on “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” but in reality, they are happily married with two sons. Reflecting on their journey since the show debuted in 2005, McElhenny shared with Variety, “Our 15-year-old was just watching Sunny Season 1 the other night…and we started watching with him. And we look like little kids!”
Despite the stark differences between their real selves and their on-screen personas, McElhenny and Olson have embraced the evolution of their relationship over the years. From creating characters to now watching their teenage son see them in an earlier version is a surreal experience, according to McElhenny.
While McElhenny and Olson continue to star in the long-standing show, they have expanded their horizons beyond Sunny. McElhenney co-created Mythic Quest on Apple TV+ and co-owns the UK football club Wrexham with Ryan Reynolds. Olson, on the other hand, shines in the hit ABC comedy High Potential and has a recurring role on HBO’s Hacks.
Together, they navigate parenthood with a pact to always be available for their kids at crucial moments each day. They prioritize their children, ensuring that no matter how busy they get, their kids know they are the number one priority.
Their two sons, Axel Lee and Leo Grey, were born in September 2010 and April 2012, respectively. Balancing their bustling careers with parenting, McElhenny and Olson have relied on their wisdom when it comes to raising children.
Though their kids have made brief appearances on Sunny, McElhenny and Olson have made a conscious effort to shield them from the spotlight to protect their privacy. However, their sons did make an appearance in Welcome to Wrexham, much to Olson’s chagrin.
In a world where fame reigns supreme, McElhenny and Olson prioritize their family unit, making time for dinner together and post-dinner activities, cherishing these moments of togetherness with their children.
