Long before becoming the U.S. Secretary of Transportation, Sean Duffy was already making waves on reality TV. In 1997, he made his debut on MTV’s The Real World: Boston. Now, the former congressman is set to return to the small screen in a new family-focused reality series, The Great American Road Trip. And no, it’s not at all related to MTV’s Road Rules.
MTV changed the TV landscape with its unscripted series The Real World in 1992. The original show followed seven strangers living together and having their lives recorded. After the New York season captured Gen X’s attention, the show moved to other major cities, including Boston in 1997, where Duffy joined the cast as a plaid-clad Midwestern lumberjack with a charming smile.
Duffy didn’t just stop at The Real World, though. He also appeared in the spinoff Road Rules: All Stars the following year, embarking on a road trip adventure with fellow MTV personalities. It was during this journey that Duffy met his now-wife, Fox News host Rachel Campos-Duffy, leading to a lasting relationship and a beautiful family with nine children.
Now, Duffy and Campos are hitting the road again, but this time with their entire family in tow. Despite rising gas prices, Duffy is moving forward with his on-the-road family vacation, which was quietly filmed over the past seven months for The Great American Road Trip. In an interview with Fox News, Duffy expressed his motivation for the show, stating, “I want to lean into America’s 250th birthday. Rachel and I actually met on a road trip on a reality show. And so over the course of seven months, we just kind of found these moments where I might be able to do some work. I could take the kids with me on a road trip. Oh yeah, and our motto is ‘To love America, is to see America.’ And there’s so much to see in this beautiful country.”
