Elinor Donahue, best known for her role as Betty Anderson on the classic TV show Father Knows Best, recently celebrated her 89th birthday on April 19, 2026. Born in Tacoma, Washington in 1937, Donahue began her career as a dancer before landing the iconic role just before her 18th birthday over 70 years ago.
In an interview with the Television Academy Foundation, Donahue fondly recalled celebrating her 18th birthday on the set of Father Knows Best, surrounded by her co-stars Robert Young and Jane Wyatt. Reflecting on her time playing the all-American teen Betty “Princess” Anderson for six seasons, she shared how her character was quite different from her own shy and withdrawn personality.
Donahue’s career extended beyond her time on Father Knows Best, as she joined the cast of The Andy Griffith Show in 1960, playing Andy’s girlfriend Ellie Walker. Despite feeling out of place on the show, she continued to book guest spots on various series before landing a recurring role on The Odd Couple in 1972 as Miriam Welby.
Throughout her long career, which included appearances in two Father Knows Best reunion movies in 1977 and a role on Days of Our Lives in the 1980s, Donahue always maintained a sense of gratitude. Reflecting on her experiences, she humbly expressed, “It was all just so magical. Honestly, I’ve had a lot of fun.”
With her unique journey in the entertainment industry, Elinor Donahue’s contributions to classic television will always hold a special place in the hearts of fans.
