Patrick Swayze, a Hollywood mainstay in the 1980s, already had a solid reputation thanks to his roles in “The Outsiders” and “Red Dawn.” However, it was with “Dirty Dancing” that he truly solidified his status as a global icon.
Making waves on the big screen, the legendary star unexpectedly made an impact in the music industry as well.
In December 1987, Swayze released “She’s Like the Wind” as the second single from the soundtrack of “Dirty Dancing.” Originally intended for the movie “Grandview, U.S.A.,” Swayze co-wrote the song with composer and songwriter Stacy Widelitz, as reported by Smooth Radio.
While initially not part of the movie soundtrack, Swayze played the demo for producer Linda Gottlieb and director Emile Ardolino during the production of “Dirty Dancing.” Impressed, the soundtrack’s executive producers, Jimmy Ienner and Bob Feiden, decided to include it.
To enhance the film’s emotional tone, the song was re-recorded as a power ballad and featured in a poignant scene where Swayze’s character, Johnny Castle, and Jennifer Grey’s character, Baby Houseman, part ways.
During the recording session, the producers believed that “She’s Like the Wind” would not only be a hit for Swayze but a major hit. This prediction eventually came true.
Reflecting on the recording process, Swayze mentioned how the producers were convinced they were recording a major hit song, rather than just another track. The final version of the song included touches like repeated lyrics and sleigh bells for the fadeout.
Like the movie, “She’s Like the Wind” received a positive reception and reached the top of the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and the Irish Singles Chart. It also made it to the top three on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained in the top 10 for several weeks.
Although Swayze continued to be a Hollywood icon, starring in hits like “Ghost,” “She’s Like the Wind” was later remembered as a one-hit wonder, adding a lesser-known but significant chapter to the actor’s life.
It was a moment that showcased Swayze’s versatility and talent beyond acting, cementing his legacy in both film and music.
