Longtime Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell, 64, has passed away following a complex and major operation, as announced by his family. Welsh rock band Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons, including Campbell’s sons Todd, Dane, and Tyla Campbell, shared the heartbreaking news on March 14.
Campbell, born in Pontypridd, Wales, in 1961, began his musical journey at the age of 13, co-founding his first heavy metal band, Persian Risk, in 1979. In 1984, after auditioning for Motörhead alongside Michael “Würzel” Burston, Campbell joined the legendary band as a guitarist, where he stayed until frontman Lemmy’s passing in 2015.
Following his time with Motörhead, Campbell embarked on his own project in 2016, forming Phil Campbell and The Bastard Sons with his sons and former Attack! Attack! singer Neil Starr. Unfortunately, the band recently had to cancel their Australian tour for health reasons, prioritizing Campbell’s well-being.
Tributes from fans and music industry peers poured in, with Doro Pesch praising Campbell’s talent and friendship, and former bandmate Mikkey Dee remembering him as a skilled guitarist and funny companion. Conti 2023 honored Campbell’s musical legacy, while FCK.FM Magazine reminisced about the Motörhead days in heaven with Lemmy, Philthy Animal Taylor, and Würzel.
In the wake of Campbell’s passing, the music world mourns the loss of a true rock icon whose powerful riffs defined Motörhead’s sound and inspired generations. Though he may be gone, his music will undoubtedly live on forever.
This tragic loss serves as a reminder of the profound impact Campbell had on the music industry and the lasting legacy he leaves behind, ensuring his spirit continues to resonate in the hearts of his fans and fellow musicians alike.
