The End of Thunderation: A New Chapter for Silver Dollar City

Exploring the Ozark hills for over three decades, a beloved Missouri coaster is preparing for its final run. Silver Dollar City has announced that Thunderation, the runaway mine train-style coaster, will retire on January 2, 2027, marking the end of a ride that has carried over 27 million passengers since its opening in 1993. For families visiting the park’s immersive 1880s mining-town setting, Thunderation was more than just an attraction; it was a rite of passage nestled above Marvel Cave.

As Thunderation bids farewell, Silver Dollar City president Brad Thomas looks ahead to exciting new chapters for the park. The fictional Marvel Cave Mining Co., which ceased operations in 1889, is “resuming operations,” clearing the mountain and tracks for renewed geological surveys. “Thunderation has had its run,” said Foreman Jedidiah Campbell. “But this mountain was never meant to be borrowed forever. There are still undiscovered sections of that mine, and I intend to see what it holds.”

Rather than quietly closing the gates, Silver Dollar City is turning 2026 into a season-long celebration, featuring commemorative merchandise, special ride moments, and limited-time offerings. The park, named one of America’s top theme parks, is gearing up for the opening of its first on-site resort in 2026, transforming into a multi-day destination in the Ozarks. With patriotic programming tied to America’s 250th birthday, the park’s future includes major long-term development plans across its vast acreage.

Thunderation’s retirement signifies a larger evolution for Silver Dollar City, hinting at the continuation of the mountain’s fascinating stories. As the coaster takes its final ride, the park looks forward to new beginnings and exciting developments on the horizon.
