Revisiting Buffalo Bill: Reflecting on Gender Identity in “The Silence of the Lambs”

As the 35th anniversary of the Oscar-winning film The Silence of the Lambs recently passed, actor Ted Levine reflected on his role as the infamous serial killer Buffalo Bill. Portraying a character whose gender identity storyline lacks relevance in today’s society, Levine acknowledges the outdated aspects of the movie’s portrayal of Buffalo Bill.

Buffalo Bill, also known as James Gumb, was depicted as a heinous serial killer in the film, with his sexuality left ambiguous. While never explicitly confirmed, certain details in the movie have led audiences to interpret the character as gender nonconforming or transgender. Levine addresses the criticism surrounding Buffalo Bill’s character.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Levine admits, “There are certain aspects of the movie that don’t hold up too well. We all know more, and I’m a lot wiser about transgender issues. There are some lines in that script and movie that are unfortunate.”

In The Silence of the Lambs, Buffalo Bill is portrayed as an outcast that Jodie Foster’s character attempts to profile psychologically in order to capture him. His method involves kidnapping young women and skinning their backs to create a “woman suit.” Hannibal Lecter, portrayed by Anthony Hopkins, reveals in the film that Buffalo Bill previously sought gender-affirming surgery but was rejected. The character is shown wearing feminine clothing and makeup in his hideout. Though the movie never delves fully into Buffalo Bill’s sexuality or identity, many within the transgender community have critiqued the role. Levine expresses remorse over the film vilifying a certain way of life through a serial killer.

Reflecting on his portrayal, Levine clarifies, “I didn’t play Buffalo Bill as being gay or trans. I think he was just a messed-up heterosexual man. That’s what I was doing.” He acknowledges the need for greater awareness and understanding of transgender issues in light of the film’s portrayal of Buffalo Bill.

In closing, it’s evident that the portrayal of Buffalo Bill in The Silence of the Lambs raises important conversations about gender identity and representation in media. As we continue to evolve in our understanding of these issues, it’s essential to critically examine past portrayals and strive for more accurate and respectful depictions in the future.
