Casting the Kennedy Charm: The Journey of Finding the Perfect John F. Kennedy Jr. for FX’s “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette”

The casting process for FX’s “Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette” was no easy feat. With producers auditioning over 1,000 actors to find the perfect fit for the role of John F. Kennedy Jr., it was clear they were looking for someone with George Clooney-level charisma to embody the iconic figure.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Series Creator Connor Hines and Executive Producer Nina Jacobson shared insights into the challenges they faced during the casting process. Initially, they believed finding an actress to play Carolyn Bessette would be the most difficult task, but ultimately, it was the role of JFK Jr. that proved to be a headscratcher.

Hines recalled the moment Sarah Pidgeon emerged as the frontrunner for the role of Carolyn Bessette. Her presence on screen, a blend of guardedness and accessibility coupled with talent and intelligence, captured the essence of the character effortlessly. On the other hand, finding the perfect actor to portray John F. Kennedy Jr. proved to be a daunting task, with Hines resorting to chasing down potential candidates on the street.

According to Jacobson, capturing Kennedy’s specific look posed a significant challenge. They were searching for a man with a certain rugged appeal yet devoid of the typical gym bunny aesthetics. The actor Paul Anthony Kelly eventually fit the bill, embodying the charisma and appeal necessary for the role.

The limited-run FX series delves into the love story of John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, from their initial meeting in 1992 to their tragic demise in 1999. The magnetic connection between the couple plays out against a backdrop of intense fame and media attention that threatened to tear them apart.

Alongside Sarah Pidgeon and Paul Anthony Kelly, the series features a talented ensemble cast including Grace Gummer, Naomi Watts, Alessandro Nivola, Leila George, Sydney Lemmon, and Constance Zimmer, portraying various key figures in the couple’s lives.
