In the final months before his passing, James Van Der Beek candidly shared the noticeable changes in his appearance. The beloved star of “Dawson’s Creek” tragically lost his battle with stage 3 colorectal cancer on February 11 at the age of 48.
In a now-resurfaced interview with Craig Melvin on “Today” in December 2025, Van Der Beek addressed concerns from fans about his slimmer appearance during a virtual appearance at the “Dawson’s Creek” cast reunion in September. Despite initial worries, he explained that his weight loss was due to a stomach virus and not directly related to his cancer diagnosis received in August 2023.
As Melvin probed further, Van Der Beek clarified that his weight loss was not cancer-related, humorously adding, “Although, with cancer, everything’s like, ‘Why don’t we supersize that stomach virus.'”
The poignant interview with Melvin turned out to be one of Van Der Beek’s last. His wife, Kimberly, confirmed his passing in a heartfelt message, describing his final days as filled with courage, faith, and grace. The family requested privacy as they mourned the loss of their loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.
Alongside his wife, Van Der Beek leaves behind a legacy of six children: Olivia, 15, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 12, Emilia, 9, Gwendolyn, 7, and Jeremiah, 4.
Reflecting on the life and career of James Van Der Beek, his memorable interview sheds light on his resilience, humor, and humility in the face of adversity. His legacy will forever be remembered with grace and appreciation for the impact he made in the entertainment industry and beyond.
