FDA Update: Grated Cheese Recall Notice for Easy Weeknight Meals

Stocking up on grated cheese for easy weeknight meals? Keep an eye out for a recent FDA update that has raised concerns about a group of commonly sold cheese products, particularly those stored in the fridge for quick dinners.

The risk level of these cheese products has been elevated by the FDA, indicating a higher likelihood of serious health consequences or even death if consumed. The recall affects grated Pecorino Romano cheese products after routine testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes at the production facility in West Caldwell, N.J.

Listeria, a bacteria that can survive in refrigerated environments, may not exhibit immediate symptoms. While healthy adults may experience fever, headache, nausea, and diarrhea, pregnant individuals, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at a higher risk of severe illness, miscarriage, or death.

The affected products, including grated Pecorino Romano cheese under various brand names like Ambriola, Locatelli, Member’s Mark, Pinna, and Boar’s Head, were distributed nationwide between Nov. 3–20, 2025. These items may still be in refrigerators or freezers in states like California, New York, Texas, and more.

Retailers like Sam’s Club, Wegmans, Meijer, and others carried the recalled items, with specific products including Locatelli grated Pecorino Romano in four- and eight-ounce cups, Boar’s Head grated Pecorino Romano in six-ounce cups, and Member’s Mark 1.5-pound bags at Sam’s Club.

If you have purchased any of the affected cheese products, the FDA and Ambriola recommend disposing of them or returning them to the place of purchase for a refund. The recall serves as a reminder to always stay vigilant about food safety and product recalls.

The recent escalation in risk for these cheese products highlights the importance of staying informed and taking appropriate action to protect your health and well-being. Stay updated with the latest FDA recalls and ensure the safety of your meals and snacks.
