The Casting Process Behind “Gilmore Girls” with Amy Sherman-Palladino

Amy Sherman-Palladino, co-creator of the beloved ’00s series Gilmore Girls, recently revealed fascinating insights into the casting process of the show. In a candid interview with The Hollywood Reporter in October 2025, Sherman-Palladino shared the story behind casting Sean Gunn as Kirk Gleason, a quirky resident of Star Hallows who became a fan favorite throughout the show’s impressive seven-season run until 2007.

Despite Gilmore Girls initially being seen as less significant compared to other WB shows at the time, Sherman-Palladino explained that they had the freedom to experiment with characters. When Sean Gunn first appeared as Kirk and delivered a hilarious performance, Sherman-Palladino and the team immediately knew he had to become a regular on the show. She recounted how they insisted on Gunn’s continued presence due to his undeniable comedic talent, not wanting to risk losing him to another project.

Sherman-Palladino also shared that she intentionally wrote roles for certain actors, including Liza Weil as Paris Geller, Milo Ventimiglia as Jess Mariano, and Matt Czuchry as Logan Huntzberger, all of whom became integral to the fabric of Gilmore Girls.

In a revealing interview with The Party Nerds Pop-Cast in September 2025, Sean Gunn, brother of director James Gunn, discussed how he transitioned from a one-off role as a DSL installer to becoming a regular presence in the show. Gunn humorously recalled how the casting directors recommended him for different roles, leading to his eventual establishment as Kirk, a versatile character known for his myriad jobs and humorous interactions with the townspeople.

Despite Gilmore Girls originally airing in the early 2000s, Gunn expressed his surprise at still being approached by fans, particularly after the show’s resurgence in popularity when it began streaming on Netflix in 2014. Reflecting on the enduring appeal of Gilmore Girls, Gunn emphasized the impact the show continues to have on new generations of viewers, a testament to its timeless charm and relatability.

Returning to reprise his role as Kirk in the 2016 Netflix reboot Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Gunn’s journey from a minor character to a beloved staple of the series encapsulates the enduring legacy of Gilmore Girls in the hearts of fans around the world.
