Angel: The Glam Band’s Cinematic Journey

Angel, the cult glam band that took the 1970s music scene by storm, has recently surprised fans with news of a farewell tour. Discovered by Gene Simmons in the mid-1970s, the band has left an indelible mark on the industry. But beyond their music, Angel found themselves in a surprising movie cameo in the 1980 film Foxes, starring Jodie Foster.

The classic lineup of Angel featured founding guitarist Punky Meadows, vocalist Frank DiMino, bassist Felix Robinson, keyboardist Gregg Giuffria, and drummer Barry Brandt. At the time, Casablanca Records founder Neil Bogart sought unique ways to promote the band, leading them to their unexpected movie appearance.

Foxes, a coming-of-age drama directed by Adrian Lyne, provided the perfect platform for Angel to showcase their talent. Dressed all in white, the band performed the songs “20th Century Foxes” and “Virginia,” specially written for the film. Despite the film being released on Feb. 29, 1980, the impact of Angel’s appearance has stood the test of time.

In a recent interview with Vinyl Writer Music, Frank DiMino shared insights into how the band’s involvement in Foxes came about. Neil Bogart’s vision for Angel’s exposure aligned perfectly with the movie’s storyline, leading to their memorable performance captured on screen.

While the band’s experience filming Foxes may have varied among members, it remains a pivotal moment in Angel’s history. Robinson recounted the band’s extensive involvement in the movie, showcasing their potential to break new ground in the industry. Despite facing challenges following Bogart’s untimely death, Angel’s legacy continues to live on through their music and memorable on-screen moments.

As Angel prepares to embark on their farewell tour and commemorate their 45th anniversary, their impact on both music and film remains undeniable. Their unexpected cameo in Foxes served as a testament to the band’s willingness to explore new avenues of expression and promotion. Angel’s journey, marked by highs and lows, stands as a reminder of the enduring power of music and the lasting impression of iconic performers.
