In a surprise turn of events, Kathy Garver, known for her role as big sister Cissy Davis in the classic CBS sitcom, “Family Affair,” has found herself in the running for her very first Grammy nomination after more than six decades in the spotlight.
The nomination comes in the Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording category for Garver’s narration of “Elvis, Rocky and Me: The Carol Connors Story,” the memoir of renowned songwriter Carol Connors. Garver shared in an interview with KGET in Bakersfield, California, that the recognition holds a special significance for her, especially as the audiobook features two unreleased songs by Connors.
Recording the Grammy-nominated audiobook was no easy feat. Garver detailed the demanding yet rewarding process that spanned over two and a half weeks, with multiple recording sessions to complete the narration. The memoir delves into Connors’ remarkable journey from teenage fame to writing songs for iconic artists like Dionne Warwick and Billy Preston, as well as co-writing the Oscar-nominated “Rocky” theme “Gonna Fly Now.”
Beyond her on-screen success, Garver has quietly cultivated a second career as a voice actor, with credits in various shows and video games. Voiceover work wasn’t initially on her radar, but after exploring the craft further, she developed her technique and found success in the field.
In addition to her voiceover work, Garver is also venturing into storytelling as an author. Her upcoming book, “Romancing with the Stars,” co-written with Doug Hartline, explores enduring celebrity romances and offers insights for nurturing meaningful connections in real life.
As Garver continues to diversify her career, spanning television, voice acting, audiobooks, and authorship, her Grammy nomination marks a new milestone in her storied journey. The 67th Annual Grammy Awards loom on the horizon, set to air live from Crypto Arena in Los Angeles—a testament to Garver’s timeless talent and enduring impact on the entertainment industry.
