Dennis DeYoung, former frontman of the iconic band Styx, recently gave fans a nostalgic trip back to the early 1990s. Taking to social media, DeYoung shared a resurfaced YouTube video of the band’s unreleased album, Son of Edge, created in 1992 by himself, James Young, and Glen Burtnik. Despite wanting to share the album earlier, DeYoung had concerns about potential legal issues. The musician was surprised when the unreleased music suddenly appeared on YouTube, though the video has since been taken down.
Reflecting on the era, DeYoung mused about the rise of grunge music and the band’s attempts to navigate the shifting musical landscape at the time. In his caption, he noted, “These tunes must have smelled like wet flannel to record companies as they chased the next grunger.” Listening to the music now, DeYoung praised the band’s songwriting and catchy tunes, with a particular fondness for the track “All 4 Love.”
The unreleased album was recorded in DeYoung’s home in Frankfort, Illinois, and he hinted that fans might gravitate towards “All 4 Love” as their favorite from the collection. The 78-year-old songwriter also teased that his time with Styx would be explored in more depth in his upcoming book, which is nearing completion.
Styx, formed in 1972 in Chicago, achieved commercial success in the late 1970s with their album The Grand Illusion. DeYoung played a pivotal role in the band as the main composer, frontman, keyboardist, accordion player, and producer until 1984. Despite a brief hiatus and lineup changes, Styx continued to tour and release music throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s.
DeYoung’s health issues eventually led to his departure from the band in 1999, as he sought a break to recover fully. Styx continued on with a new lineup, maintaining their active presence in the music industry. DeYoung, on the other hand, shifted his focus to his family, supporting his wife during her cancer battles and working on his memoir.
While DeYoung’s musical journey continues to evolve, Styx remains a prominent figure in the rock music scene. With new members joining the lineup, the band released their eighteenth studio album, Circling from Above, this past July. DeYoung’s legacy in the world of music and his enduring impact on fans and fellow musicians alike showcase the lasting influence of his work.
