The festive season has a new soundtrack this year, with Kylie Minogue reclaiming her throne as the queen of Christmas music. The iconic pop star has dethroned Wham!’s classic “Last Christmas” on the U.K. singles chart with her latest hit “XMAS,” marking her first No. 1 in over two decades.
In an interview with Official Charts, Kylie expressed her gratitude for the milestone achievement, stating, “It’s hard to put into words how special this feels. Being Christmas No 1 really is the most wonderful gift.”
This accomplishment makes “XMAS” Minogue’s eighth chart-topper in the U.K. and establishes her as the first female artist to achieve a No. 1 single in four different decades. Her journey to the top began in 1988 with the hit “I Should Be So Lucky.”
Interestingly, back in the late ’80s, Minogue came close to securing a Christmas No. 1 with the duet “Especially for You” featuring Jason Donovan. However, their efforts were thwarted by Cliff Richard’s “Mistletoe and Wine.”
Adding to her accolades, Kylie becomes the first Australian artist to top the U.K. chart since Nicole Kidman and Robbie Williams in 2001 with their rendition of “Somethin’ Stupid.” While Minogue participated in Band Aid’s 1989 version of “Do They Know It’s Christmas?,” her contribution was deemed minimal in chart success.
Despite releasing “XMAS” exclusively on Amazon Music, Kylie’s festive track has resonated with fans, securing a remarkable triumph on the charts. Amazon Music’s Alex Nutton highlighted the platform’s dedication to creating holiday favorites that stand the test of time, a goal that “XMAS” has clearly achieved.
This isn’t Minogue’s first foray into the realm of Christmas music. In 2015, she released the album “Kylie Christmas,” featuring covers of holiday classics and collaborations with artists like Iggy Pop. A reissue of the album, now titled “Kylie Christmas (Fully Wrapped),” recently topped the U.K. album chart, marking her 11th No. 1 album.
Kylie Minogue’s resurgence to the top of the charts with “XMAS” is a testament to her enduring appeal and musical prowess. As the holiday season approaches, her festive anthem is sure to become a staple in celebrations worldwide, solidifying her status as a legendary pop icon.
