Remembering Gil Gerard: The Iconic “Handyman” of Little House on the Prairie

Fans of the iconic TV show Little House on the Prairie are in mourning following the passing of Gil Gerard, known for his role as handyman Chris Nelson in Season 4 of the historical drama series. Gerard’s wife, Janet, announced his death on December 16 at the age of 82 after a battle with cancer.

In the wake of Gerard’s death, devoted Little House on the Prairie fans took to Reddit to share their reactions. One fan fondly remembered the actor as the “handsome handyman,” while another commented on the emotional impact of the episode he starred in, titled “The Handyman,” which aired in 1977.

In the episode, Chris assisted Ma Ingalls (Karen Grassle) with a kitchen addition while Pa Ingalls (Michael Landon) was away. Rumors began to spread among the townsfolk, including Mary and Harriet and Nellie Oleson, about a potential affair brewing between Chris and Ma. Ultimately, Charles returned to finish the project, dispelling the false rumors.

During a recent episode of the Little House on the Prairie 50th Anniversary Podcast, former costars Alison Arngrim and Dean Butler discussed the impact of the episode and shared stories from their time working with Gerard. Grassle, in her 2021 memoir Bright Lights, Prairie Dust, described Gerard as charismatic and hardworking, endearing himself to all the women on set.

More known for his role in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century, Gerard’s portrayal of Chris Nelson on Little House on the Prairie left a lasting impression on fans and colleagues alike.

With his passing, the entertainment industry has lost a talented actor whose work will be remembered by generations to come.
