“She just turned 11 years old, and she is so mature, so talented,” Rebecca said of Halsey. “She just has really fully embraced the character of Laura.” Trip Friendly, son of original producer Ed Friendly and executive producer of the new series, explained that Halsey’s performance in “Lessons in Chemistry” sealed the deal for casting her as Laura.
Unlike typical reboots, Trip Friendly views the Netflix series as a new adaptation of the original books rather than a remake of the 1970s show. The series will stay true to Laura Ingalls Wilder’s semi-autobiographical novels while incorporating more historical context from the frontier era of the 1860s-1880s.
