December 8th marks a tragic day in the history of popular music. On this date in 1980, John Lennon, the legendary member of The Beatles, was fatally shot outside his New York City apartment by a disillusioned fan. Lennon, at only 40 years old, had just begun to experience a career resurgence with his hit single “(Just Like) Starting Over” and the album “Double Fantasy” recorded with his wife Yoko Ono.
Reflecting on that fateful night, Steven Gustafson, bass player and founder of 10,000 Maniacs, shared his memories of the impact Lennon’s death had on him and how it ultimately led to the formation of his beloved band. Gustafson vividly recalled hearing the news while at a bar with future bandmate Dennis Drew, prompting them to turn off their college radio station in mourning.
Out of tragedy came creativity, as Gustafson, Drew, singer Natalie Merchant, and guitarist Robert Buck formed a band named Still Life shortly after Lennon’s passing. Just eight months later, they played their first show as 10,000 Maniacs.
Inspired by The Beatles, the band members had all dreamed of music careers since childhood, culminating in the formation of 10,000 Maniacs following Lennon’s death. Despite the loss of Buck in 2000, the band continues to create and perform to this day.
Looking ahead to 2026, Gustafson revealed that 10,000 Maniacs will celebrate their 45th anniversary with a box set of recordings, new music, and live performances. The core quartet of Gustafson, Drew, Augustyniak, and Lombardo remains intact, with Mary Ramsey joining the band in 1993 after Merchant’s departure.
As 10,000 Maniacs continues to evolve, their commitment to creating music and sharing it with their fans remains unwavering. In a nod to the past and a look towards the future, Gustafson expressed gratitude for the support they have received and wished their audience long days, pleasant nights, and happy holidays.
