Lucy Liu: Unstoppable Presence on the Big Screen

Lucy Liu’s unmistakable presence on the big screen is unstoppable. Her latest project, the impactful drama “Rosemead,” marks her first leading role and has already made waves with an impressive $50.2K opening at NYC’s AMC Lincoln Square, ranking among the top per-theater openings of the year, according to Deadline.

This weekend, moviegoers were treated to not one, but two performances from the versatile Liu. In addition to her role in “Rosemead,” she also reprised her iconic character, villain O-Ren Ishii, in the release of “Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair” by Lionsgate. The film, which combines Volumes 1 and 2, secured the No. 6 spot at the domestic box office with $3.25 million in earnings.

“Rosemead,” which premiered at the Tribeca Festival, boasts an all-Asian American creative team. The film follows Liu’s character, an ailing suburban woman who discovers a dark secret: her teenage son (played by Lawrence Shou) is consumed by violent impulses. As her health deteriorates, she grapples with the lengths she will go to protect him.

Adding to its accolades, “Rosemead” has won Best Narrative Feature at the Bentonville Film Festival and the Prix du Public UBS audience award at the Locarno Film Festival. Liu was also honored with the Career Achievement Award at the latter festival.

Despite sold-out showtimes and steady walk-up demand, “Rosemead” continues to captivate audiences. The film features notable Q&A sessions with the cast and filmmakers, including discussions moderated by Marcia Gay Harden and actress Julia Fox. The buzz surrounding the film has prompted an expansion to AMC Century City in LA next weekend.

Reflecting on the film’s reception, Liu expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support. “When Mynette Louie, Andrew Corkin, and I embarked on this journey with ‘Rosemead,’ our goal was to spark conversations and touch hearts. The connection felt with everyone this weekend is truly meaningful,” she shared.

Lucy Liu’s resurgence in Hollywood is not just a comeback; it’s a testament to her enduring talent and dedication. As she continues to make her mark on the industry, her work in “Rosemead” serves as a powerful reminder of her artistry and impact.
