Legendary KISS Guitarist Ace Frehley’s Unexpected Death: Gene Simmons Speaks Out

The late Ace Frehley’s Unexpected Death: Gene Simmons Speaks Out

In a tragic turn of events, legendary KISS guitarist Ace Frehley passed away earlier this year after suffering a fatal brain bleed from a fall. His death was ruled accidental, with the cause listed as blunt force trauma to the head. However, bandmate Gene Simmons recently suggested that Frehley’s lifestyle choices may have contributed to the accident.

Simmons, known for his outspoken nature, revealed in a December 2025 interview with The New York Post that Frehley did not heed advice from loved ones, including himself, to change his ways. Despite efforts to help, Frehley seemed to be in a pattern of making poor decisions. Simmons expressed sorrow over the situation, noting that ultimately, we reap what we sow.

While Frehley had a reputation for hard-partying in the past, he had been sober for 14 years leading up to his death. In an interview with Loudwire, he credited his sobriety to a strong support system and regular attendance at AA meetings.

The timing of Frehley’s passing was particularly heartbreaking, as it came just two months before KISS was set to receive a lifetime achievement honor at The Kennedy Center Honors ceremony. Simmons lamented the fact that Frehley was unable to witness the tribute and the appreciation from fellow musicians.

President Donald Trump had announced the band’s upcoming honor in August, much to Frehley’s delight. He called it a dream come true, a recognition he never thought possible.

Frehley was posthumously honored at the Kennedy Center Honors ceremony on December 6. In a poignant moment, his daughter accepted a custom medal on his behalf, alongside original KISS members Simmons, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss.

In the wake of Frehley’s passing, Simmons’s reflections on his late bandmate’s life and choices serve as a sobering reminder of the consequences of our decisions. The world of rock and roll lost a legend, but his legacy lives on through his music and the impact he had on those around him.
