As Tim Allen sat down with Jimmy Fallon on “The Tonight Show” recently, fans were eager to hear about his latest projects. However, it was a story from his “Home Improvement” days that caught everyone’s attention. The TV legend shared the real-life inspiration behind the famous grunt he used frequently on the sitcom that made him a household name.
Fallon shared with Allen the responses a woman received on Hinge after asking men to send their best Allen impression. Some were more impressive than others, but Allen couldn’t deny that hearing them all back-to-back was quite the experience. He revealed that legendary musician Bob Seger was the one who convinced him to come up with a “hook” for his signature sound.
“It was like my new song,” Allen explained. “Bob Seger saw me in concert and said, ‘You put butts in the seats, you own it, but you’ve gotta get a hook. Something that people remember.'” And Allen found that hook during “corporate gigs” for companies like tire brands, where he observed a group of men eating steak in silence, only emitting grunts.
“So I started doing that,” Allen continued. “And it became a huge deal.” The challenge came in trying to spell out the sound for the “Home Improvement” scripts, with Allen explaining to Fallon, “O-U-G-H is ‘Ough?’ It’s a polite question.”
Fans of Allen were quick to praise his iconic character, with one commenting, “I grew up watching Tim Allen on ‘Home Improvement’.” The show, which aired on ABC from 1991 to 1999, marked Allen’s first acting role and was a massive hit. He went on to star in successful film franchises like “The Santa Clause” and “Toy Story,” before finding another hit with “Last Man Standing” from 2011 to 2021.
Now, Allen stars in “Shifting Gears” alongside Kat Dennings and Jenna Elfman, where he plays a stubborn yet lovable dad and grandpa. The show airs on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and can be streamed on Hulu. Fans can also catch all eight seasons of “Home Improvement” on Hulu, reliving the iconic moments from the beloved sitcom.
In the world of Tim Allen, grunts and laughs come together to create a lasting legacy that continues to entertain audiences across the globe.
