Bernie Kopell, a seasoned actor, is widely recognized for his portrayal of Dr. Adam Bricker on the beloved TV series “The Love Boat.” Kopell brought the character of the cruise ship Casanova to life from 1977 to 1986, but the origin of the character’s name has a rather unconventional backstory.
In a recent interview with People magazine, the 92-year-old actor revealed that he played a key role in naming Dr. Bricker after director Hy Averback felt that the character’s original name from the 1976 “Love Boat” movie didn’t quite suit him. In the movie, the character was named Dr. Adam O’Neill, portrayed by Dick Van Patten.
During late-night brainstorming sessions to rename the character, Kopell recounted how Averback suggested, “The guy chases the ladies. He’s a bit of a pricker, isn’t he?” Kopell quickly retorted, “Well, we can’t call him that. We have to change the P to a B.” And thus, the name Dr. Bricker was born.
Kopell’s transformation into Dr. Bricker also marked his debut as a sex symbol, a role he had never played before in his acting career. The unexpected shift in perception surprised Kopell, who had previously appeared in recurring roles on “That Girl” and “Get Smart.”
Interestingly, Kopell was not the only cast member who underwent a name change as the TV series transitioned from the original movie. On “TV We Love,” it was revealed that the handsome Australian actor Ted Hamilton initially played Captain Thomas Allenford III in the movie. However, the producers decided to replace him with Gavin MacLeod as Captain Merrill Stubing for fear that Hamilton’s attractiveness would make him the cruise ship Casanova, a role they reserved for Dr. Bricker.
In the ever-evolving world of entertainment, the story of how Dr. Bricker got his name serves as a fascinating glimpse into the creative process behind a character’s identity. With Bernie Kopell’s unique contribution, the character of Dr. Bricker not only became a fan favorite but also challenged traditional perceptions of sex symbols on screen.
