Remembering “The Un-Underground Movie” Thanksgiving Episode of The Brady Bunch

In a recent episode of the podcast The Real Brady Bros, Barry Williams and Christopher Knight fondly reminisced about filming “The Un-Underground Movie” episode of The Brady Bunch over 50 years ago. The episode, originally aired on Oct. 16, 1970, is best known as the Thanksgiving episode due to its storyline.

The episode follows Greg (played by Williams) as he creates a documentary on the first Thanksgiving for a school project, casting his family members and housekeeper Alice as Pilgrims and Native Americans. Williams reflected on the experience, noting how it showcased the family dynamic and interactions early on in the show’s second year.

Knight chimed in, mentioning how the episode allowed everyone to have “tremendous fun” and tap into their inner child, bringing the adults down to his “natural level.” Both actors agreed that the episode hinted at changes to come in the show’s concept, with the focus slowly shifting from the adults to the whole family unit.

As the episode unfolds with Mike (Robert Reed) filming Bobby and Cindy in the backyard, Williams pointed out a striking detail that sparked a memory. He asked Knight about a Christmas a few years later when Reed generously gifted them Super 8 movie cameras before a trip to England in 1972.

The Thanksgiving scene, as Williams suggested, may have been the spark for Reed’s thoughtful gesture. This act of generosity touched many of the cast members over the years, including Reed’s gift of Super 8 cameras that became cherished possessions for the Brady kids.

Reflecting on the impact of the episode, Williams and Knight marveled at how it hinted at changes in the show’s focus and highlighted Reed’s investment in the cast’s experiences both on and off-screen. The lasting impact of “The Un-Underground Movie” episode resonates even today, as the cast fondly recalls the thoughtful gestures of their TV dad.
