The Genderfluid Spider: Damarchus Inazuma

A team of researchers at the Chulalongkorn University Museum of Natural History in Thailand recently discovered a new species of spider that they named Damarchus Inazuma. This spider is unique in that it displays both male and female sexual characteristics, a trait known as gynandromorphism.

The researchers found that the Damarchus Inazuma spider’s coloration closely resembles its namesake character from the animated pirate series One Piece. The spider’s cephalothorax shows female orange characteristics on one side and white male traits on the other, giving it a distinct “split” appearance.

Gynandromorphism, the condition of having both male and female traits, is common among insects like butterflies and moths, as well as in certain bird species. While gynandromorphism is not possible in humans due to our hormonal development, variations in sex characteristics are still prevalent, with an estimated 1.7% of the global population identifying as intersex.

The character Inazuma from One Piece is known for the ability to change genders, a power shared with the recently discovered spider species. In the series, Inazuma serves as the deputy commander of the G Army, under the command of Emporio Ivankov, who can change a person’s gender at will.

Overall, the discovery of the Damarchus Inazuma spider highlights the fascinating diversity of nature and the intricacies of sexual dimorphism in different species.
