NHS Administrator Avoids Jail Time After Stealing £80,000 for Online Boyfriend

A 63-year-old National Health Service (NHS) administrator, Hyacinth Blair, recently avoided jail time after admitting to stealing 80,000 to send to her online boyfriend in Nigeria. Blair, who worked for South London and Maudsley NHS trust, withdrew the funds over a period of several months before being caught. The judge noted that the money was meant for public services and Blair’s actions caused distress among her colleagues, leading to a review of financial controls within the trust.

Blair claimed that her online boyfriend, Michael Okafor, pressured her into sending the money, leaving her feeling helpless. Despite initially stating that she had no idea why she took the funds, Blair later admitted to being in an online relationship with Okafor. The judge recognized Blair’s struggles with depression and the fact that she is now unemployed and on government assistance.

As part of her sentence, Blair was given a two-year suspended jail term, required to complete 250 hours of unpaid work, 15 days of rehabilitation activities, and six months of mental health treatment. The judge warned Blair that any further criminal activity would result in immediate imprisonment. Blair’s positive character references and lack of previous convictions played a significant role in her receiving a lenient sentence.
