“Divorces Are Painful”: Melinda Responds to Bill Gates’ Divorce Regret

Melinda Gates has responded to her ex-husband Bill Gates’s recent comment, where he called their divorce “the mistake I most regret.”

In an interview with Elle for its 2025 Women of Impact issue, Melinda spoke about it with a mix of humor and sincerity.

When asked about Bill’s remark, Melinda joked, “You’ve clearly Googled more than I have,” and rolled her eyes. She then acknowledged the pain of their divorce, saying, “Divorces are painful, and it’s not something I would wish on any family.”

Still, she emphasized that ending their 27-year marriage was necessary for her personal growth and well-being.

Bill had earlier described the divorce as “miserable” and his biggest regret, but he also mentioned that they are working together on their charity, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Bill and Melinda have three children and two grandchildren. Bill confirmed they maintain contact due to family events.

The couple, who separated in 2021, have moved on in their personal lives but continue to work together.

Melinda focuses on her work with Pivotal Ventures, supporting women’s rights and social causes, while Bill has started a new relationship with Paula Hurd.
