Michelle Trachtenberg, Star of Gossip Girl and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dies at 39

Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away at the age of 39. 

The NYPD confirmed to PEOPLE that they responded to a 911 call at 1 Columbus Place in New York City around 8:00 a.m. on February 26. 

Upon arrival, officers found a 39-year-old woman unconscious and unresponsive. 

EMS declared her deceased at the scene, and there is no suspicion of criminality.

The investigation is ongoing, with the New York Post being the first to report the news.

Trachtenberg was widely recognized for her roles as Georgina Sparks on “Gossip Girl” and Dawn Summers on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” 

She began her career in commercials before starring in Nickelodeon’s “The Adventures of Pete & Pete” and “All My Children.”

Her major breakout role came in 1996 when she starred as the titular character in “Harriet the Spy.” 

Over the years, she also had several notable roles in films and television, including “EuroTrip,” “17 Again,” and “Ice Princess.”

Trachtenberg’s last credited appearance was in 2023, where she reprised her role as Georgina Sparks in the Max reboot of “Gossip Girl.” 

In the year leading up to her passing, fans expressed concerns about her health due to a significant change in her appearance. 

In response, she addressed the comments, stating, “Fun fact. This is my face. Not malnutrition no problems. Why do you have to hate? Get a calendar.”

In another Instagram post, she mentioned, “I’ve received several comments recently about my appearance. I have never had plastic surgery; I am happy and healthy. Check yourself haters.” 

Her final Instagram post was just seven days ago, featuring a throwback where she expressed her desire to “look like naughty.”
