Why Did Issa Rae Cancel Her Sold Out Show at Kennedy Centre?

President Donald Trump’s second term has started with a lot of action and controversy. In just a few weeks, he’s signed several executive orders, including banning transgender women from competing in women’s sports, releasing JFK assassination records, ending DEI programs in the government, and stopping the minting of pennies.

Trump has also made a big move outside of politics. On February 7, 2025, he announced that he would become the chairman of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. He fired 18 Democratic appointees and was quickly elected to the position.

This led to immediate reactions, including Issa Rae, the creator of Insecure, canceling her sold-out show at the venue. Here’s what we know so far.

Why did Issa Rae cancel her Kennedy Center show?

The Kennedy Center is a major cultural landmark, known for hosting some of the best performances and entertainers in the country.

In addition to its regular shows, the Kennedy Center Honors and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to American culture.

Issa Rae’s decision to cancel her shows at the venue was likely a tough one. In an Instagram Story, the writer/actor expressed her gratitude to fans and the Kennedy Center for selling out her show.

She wrote, “Unfortunately, due to what I believe to be an infringement on the values of an institution that has faithfully celebrated artists of all backgrounds through all mediums, I’ve decided to cancel my appearance at this venue.” All tickets for her show will be refunded.

Her statement was shared on X, where reactions have been mixed. Many people support her decision, though some have expressed disappointment.

Others, less kindly, have said “good riddance” with insulting comments. There’s also a growing hope that other performers scheduled at the Kennedy Center may follow Issa’s lead. Time will tell.
