Retired athlete Serena Williams made headlines after she crip-walked during Kendrick Lamar’s verse in “Not Like Us” at Sunday’s big game.
There were so many speculations surrounding the iconic dance with some attributing to her ex Drake whom Kendrick Lamar is dissing.
However, she cleared the air on Tuesday, explaining that she participated simply because the rapper, also from Compton, asked her to join in.
“When @kendricklamar and team called and said, ‘We’ve been trying to do something forever, what about this? We loved your crip walk at the Olympics after you won the gold medal,’” Williams wrote on Instagram.
“I thought, Super Bowl? Are you serious? When would I ever get to dance at a Super Bowl? (Never) let’s do it!” She added, “I knew my winning dance after the @olympics would pay off one day. End of story.”
During Lamar’s much-talked-about performance, the camera captured Williams, a fellow Compton native, doing the C-walk on an elevated platform in New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome.
Her surprise appearance sent social media into a frenzy, making fans of Lamar happy while drawing criticism from an ESPN commentator who accused her of “trolling” her reported ex.
However, Williams seemed unbothered, sharing a behind-the-scenes video of her game-day prep and calling the experience “the best 10 seconds of my life.”
At 43, she humorously recalled facing backlash for her dance moves after winning gold in 2012, joking about how she wouldn’t have dared to do it at Wimbledon in 2023 for fear of a fine.
