Cecile Richards has passed away.
The former president of Planned Parenthood died on January 20, following a diagnosis of glioblastoma, an aggressive type of brain cancer, less than two years ago.
She was 67 years old.
Richards’ family, including her husband, Kirk Adams, and their children, Lily, Hannah, and Daniel, confirmed her death in a statement to People.
“Our beloved Cecile passed away at home this morning, surrounded by her family and her loyal dog, Ollie,” the family shared.
“Our hearts are broken today, but no words can capture the joy she brought to our lives.”
They expressed gratitude to the doctors and healthcare workers who cared for her, as well as to friends and family who supported her during this difficult time.
In honor of Cecile, they encouraged mourners to celebrate her life by enjoying New Orleans jazz, gathering with loved ones over a good meal, and remembering her words from the past year: “It’s not hard to imagine future generations one day asking: ‘When there was so much at stake for our country, what did you do?’ The only acceptable answer is: ‘Everything we could.’”
