Sarah Michelle Gellar stirred up controversy on Wednesday during her appearance at the “Dexter: Original Sin” premiere, where she discussed the upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” reboot.
At 47, the actress expressed her excitement about the project’s “incredible cast” and “fun script,” but the conversation took an awkward turn when an Extra reporter inquired about Jennifer Love Hewitt.
“I know Jennifer Love Hewitt said that she’s possibly returning,” the journalist asked. “You can’t tell [us]?” Gellar simply shrugged and stated that she has “nothing to do with that.”
The red carpet clip caught the attention of social media users, many of whom felt that the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” alum was “definitely throwing shade” at the 45-year-old.
Just the day before, Hewitt had appeared on the “I’ve Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario” podcast, where she mentioned Gellar.
Hewitt addressed the rumored “fighting,” saying, “I root for her and [husband] Freddie [Prinze Jr.] and think it’s the cutest thing in the world that they’ve been married for 100 years and have kids.
It’s adorable,” the “9-1-1” star added. “So it’s been really funny to see all this [negative] stuff that people think.”
Hewitt and Gellar co-starred in “I Know What You Did Last Summer” back in 1997, portraying Julie James and Helen Shivers, respectively.
