Austrian Documentary Filmmaker Katharina Copony Passes Away at 51

Austrian filmmaker Katharina Copony, known for her impactful work in the documentary field, passed away in Vienna on Saturday at the age of 51 following a brief illness. Born in Graz, Copony studied visual media design under the mentorship of acclaimed artist Peter Weibel, developing a unique cinematic approach that combined personal narratives with cultural exploration.

Copony’s last full-length film, In der Kaserne, debuted at the Diagonale Film Festival in 2019. The film drew inspiration from her family’s history, especially her grandmother’s role in managing a military canteen in Styria. Her previous work, Players (2014), provided an in-depth look into the world of poker, while Moghen paris – And they’re coming along (2016) followed the traditional carnival of a Sardinian mountain village, a project that earned her awards at both the Viennale and a film festival in South Korea.

One of Copony’s most personal works, Der Wackelatlas, was a tribute to the legacy of Austrian writer HC Artmann, created alongside his daughter and Copony’s cousin, Emily Artmann. This film reflected her unique style, blending family history with literary homage, and added to her accolades as a filmmaker. In 2012, she was honoured with the Outstanding Artist Award for her achievements in documentary film.

Throughout her career, Copony’s work was marked by an innovative use of sound, space, and visual contrasts. It pushed the boundaries of traditional documentary filmmaking and established her as a unique voice in Austrian cinema. Her loss is deeply felt across the arts community.
