Madonna has expressed her sorrow over the passing of her brother Christopher Ciccone, who died from cancer at the age of 63 on Friday.
In a tribute via Instagram on Sunday, the singer reflected on the closeness she shared with her brother.
“My brother Christopher is gone, he was the closest human to me for so long. Its hard to explain our bond.
“But it grew out of an understanding that we were different and society was going to give us a hard time for not following the status quo”, she wrote.
Madonna reminisced about her and Ciccone’s shared passion for dancing when they were kids, explaining that it was the “superglue” that held them together “through the madness of [their] childhood.”
“Discovering Dance in our small Midwestern town saved me and then my brother came along, and it saved him too,” the Michigan-born pop star wrote.
“My ballet Teacher, also named Christopher — created a safe space for my brother to be Gay [sic]. a word that was not spoken or even whispered where we lived.”
The singer explained that her brother finally accompanied her to New York City, where they their careers as dancers began.
“We danced together on stage in the beginning of my career and eventually, he became the Creative Director, of many tours,” she wrote.
Madonna further described Ciccone as “a painter a poet and a visionary” with “impeccable taste.”
“I admired him,” she continued, “I did my best to keep him alive as long as possible. He was in so much pain towards the end.
“Once again, we held hands We closed our eyes and we danced. Together.”
Madonna concluded her tribute, stating that she was “glad he’s not suffering anymore.”
“There will never be anyone like him,” she added. “I know he’s dancing somewhere.”
Ciccone is survived by his husband Ray Thacker.
