Tyla has been a hot topic ever since her global hit song Water went viral. She has garnered numerous accolades, including a Grammy, a BET, and most recently, an MTV Video Music Award. However, after her acceptance speech, she faced backlash from Americans online.
Bongos hitmaker Cardi B took to X (formerly Twitter) Spaces to defend Tyla amidst the social media bullying. The criticism stemmed from viewers perceiving Tyla as rude towards Halle Bailey, who asked her to hold her award. Cardi, however, noted that Tyla was asking Lil Nas X to hold the award instead because he was the man.
“Tyla wishes she never won that VMA award. If she had known it would bring so much hate and criticism, I bet she was crying that night,” Cardi told her Bardigang audience. “The internet is so insufferable. The way you all take a moment and turn it into something it’s not, just to crush somebody. You criticise so much without even realising you’re bullying this girl. You don’t really have a reason, but you’re making one because you don’t like her for whatever reason. You’re doing too much.”
Tyla has since been labelled as “uppity” and accused of being overly confident.
Cardi also pointed out that the awards are heavy, and Tyla has a more petite build.
“You gotta worry about doing a speech, looking good, while carrying a 10-pound award in your hand. I just don’t think you understand how heavy those awards are,” she added.
