Angela Bassett has won her first Emmy Award, securing the Outstanding Narrator accolade at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys.
Bassett’s compelling narration in National Geographic’s all-female-led nature documentary Queens earned her this recognition on 7 September. The documentary, which highlights female animals’ lives and survival struggles worldwide, allowed Bassett to lend her powerful voice to the project.
“Oh my God. Wow,” Bassett exclaimed while accepting the award, according to PEOPLE. “My first Emmy!”
Reflecting on the achievement, Bassett expressed both surprise and gratitude. “This is one of the big ones, and that doesn’t usually happen,” she said during a press conference. Known for her iconic roles in film and television, the actress mentioned how she drew inspiration from her mentors and remained deeply focused on her craft throughout her career.
“I’m just a girl who wanted to act, and my mentors were way out ahead of me,” Bassett added. “I looked up to them for inspiration and hope, and I channelled my focus, energy, and love to make it happen in my life.”
This milestone brings Bassett closer to EGOT status, as she already holds multiple prestigious accolades, including an Academy Award nomination and numerous Golden Globe awards. With this Emmy win, she continues to cement her legacy in Hollywood as a remarkable actress and an exceptional voice artist.
