‘My Values Have Not Changed’- VP Kamala Harris reveals

In her crucial first interview after securing the Democratic presidential nomination, Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized that addressing economic challenges and strengthening the middle class would be her top priority from day one.

Harris expressed her belief that Americans are eager for a fresh approach, fueled by hope and optimism, ready to move past the era of former President Donald Trump.

The interview raised the pivotal question of whether Harris, as the current vice president, can embody this desired change, gaining significance with just over two months left until Election Day.

Throughout the session, Harris showcased a strategic approach akin to bobbing and weaving, a tactic she had employed since July when President Joe Biden withdrew from the race following a lacklustre debate performance against Trump, highlighted that her top priority on day one would be tackling economic challenges facing the middle class, without delving into many specific policies she plans to enact.

Nonetheless, she defended Biden’s economic track record, pointing to job growth and a rapid pandemic recovery compared to other affluent nations, stating, “There’s more to do. But that’s good work.”

During the interview, Harris navigated questions about her past stances that excited progressives and newer, more moderate versions, asserting that her core values remained unchanged despite refining her platform.

Alongside her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, they addressed controversies surrounding the post-pandemic economic rebound and previous statements, expressing confidence that voters were chiefly concerned with Trump’s agenda.

For her backers, Harris avoided a major misstep that could have shifted the momentum in her opponent’s favour, while sceptics seeking more detailed policy insights from the Democratic nominee might feel unsatisfied.

The crucial test lies in how moderate voters interpret Harris’ unscripted responses to inquiries probing the specifics of her policy agenda, including her stance on an immigration deal involving additional border wall construction or fracking—policies she opposed during her prior presidential campaign.
