Over the years, women’s privacy has been violated. Unfortunately, even custodians of the law that should protect them are now spearheading these violations.
A former senior Israel Defense Forces officer, Lt. Col. Dan Sharoni, faced conviction by a military court for numerous sex offences and privacy violations.
Sharoni was arrested in 2021 for filming his female subordinates without their knowledge, gathering explicit images over eight years. He was relieved of his duties that same year.
The military court found Sharoni guilty of 67 offences, including indecency, privacy violations, computer hacking, attempted indecency, and conduct unbecoming a soldier.
The IDF stated that the court fully accepted the victims’ testimonies and dismissed the defendant’s claim of a non-sexual motive.
According to the December 2021 indictment, Sharoni used hidden cameras, some disguised as phone chargers, to film soldiers without their consent, even placing them in barracks and showers.
Sharoni was also accused of seizing soldiers’ phones under pretences, searching for intimate photos, and transferring them to his device.
The indictment identified 49 victims, both male and female, with a possibility of more. Most victims were soldiers, but Sharoni also recorded civilians in homes, including his own.
Additionally, he was accused of entering victims’ rooms while they slept and recording them in compromising situations.
According to the charge sheet, Sharoni committed these offences between 2013 and 2021, cutting across his time in three different military units.
Many of the victims were soldiers and officers who had close relationships with Sharoni.
During the 2022 trial, a plea deal was initially reached with Sharoni but faced opposition from numerous victims, leading to its cancellation.
The deal involved Sharoni admitting to the charges, facing imprisonment, demotion, and compensating the 49 victims with NIS 250,000 ($72,000).
