Writer and director Brian Helgeland, the mastermind behind this beloved comedy, has recently shared some surprising behind-the-scenes revelations. Released by Sony Pictures in 2001, the film followed the charming peasant squire William Thatcher, portrayed by the late Heath Ledger, as he unexpectedly finds himself triumphing in jousting tournaments and forming connections with historical figures.
Interestingly, Helgeland disclosed that the studio initially had a different actor in mind for the central role, preferring Paul Walker over Ledger. The director explained to The Guardian, “At the top of [the shortlist] was Paul Walker. I met him but he seemed too contemporary, like a guy who should be driving race cars – which he did so well in The Fast and the Furious. I just thought: ‘You’re not going to pull this off.'”
Ultimately, Ledger’s undeniable talent and charisma won Helgeland over during a chance encounter at LAX airport. The director fondly recalled, “I met him at a restaurant and he had this long leather case with him. ‘What’s in the case?’ I asked. He said: ‘It’s my didgeridoo.’ ‘Can you play it?’ I asked. He said: ‘Of course I can.’ And he started blowing on it like a white Australian Miles Davis. Everyone was looking. I fell in love with him in that moment and offered him the part.”
Adding to the cast surprises, Paul Bettany’s role as Geoffrey Chaucer almost went to Hugh Grant. Helgeland shared, “I wrote the part of Chaucer for Paul Bettany, although Sony wanted Hugh Grant.” Bettany himself revealed that the director went as far as threatening to walk away from the project if he wasn’t cast. In the end, with Ledger’s rising star status, the studio relented, allowing Bettany to shine in the role.
