Why Barbara Pierce Bush Is Campaigning for Kamala Harris Ahead of the Election

Barbara Pierce Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush and granddaughter of former President George H.W. Bush, campaigned over the weekend for Vice President Kamala Harris in Pennsylvania, days before the 2024 presidential election.

“It was inspiring to join friends and meet voters with the Harris-Walz campaign in Pennsylvania this weekend,” Barbara, 42, told PEOPLE on Tuesday, 29 October. “I’m hopeful they’ll move our country forward and protect women’s rights.”

Though her father served as a Republican president from 2001 to 2009, Barbara has long maintained an independent stance. She first made headlines in 2010 by speaking at a Planned Parenthood event, supporting women’s health access and expressing views distinct from her family’s political legacy. In her own words, Barbara has been “proud to stand with Planned Parenthood” to help women live “dignified, healthy lives.”

Barbara’s decision to campaign for Harris is among several endorsements from prominent figures across party lines, including Dick Cheney and his daughter, former Wyoming Representative Liz Cheney, as well as Susan Ford Bales, daughter of former Republican President Gerald Ford.

With a background in nonprofit work, including co-founding Global Health Corps, Barbara’s focus remains on public service. Her mother, Laura Bush, has also expressed support for women’s rights, stating that abortion should remain legal “for medical reasons and other reasons.”

Barbara, now a mother of two, remains unaffiliated with either political party, consistently using her platform to advocate for issues close to her heart. Her recent campaign efforts highlight a continued dedication to bipartisan values in American politics.
