Whoopi Goldberg Says She’s Still Stay in Touch with Her Exes

The 68-year-old actress, who has a daughter named Alex, 50, from her marriage to Alvin Martin, and was previously married to cinematographer David Claessen and actor Lyle Trachtenberg, recently emphasised her respect for her former partners during an appearance on The View. While she keeps in touch with all her exes, she clarified that this does not mean they socialise regularly.

“I’m in touch with all of my exes. I’m in touch with every one of them because they were once my friends,” she told her co-hosts. “It doesn’t mean that we talk all the time, but I will be respectful enough for you. I don’t have to sleep with you, I don’t have to eat with you — I don’t have to do any of those things that a relationship requires. But I can be friendly because there’s nobody that I’ve lived with or been involved with that I absolutely hate.”

Goldberg, best known for her role in Ghost, has previously shared that she is “not that interested” in remarrying, as she enjoys her independence. In a 2016 interview with The New York Times Magazine, she said, “I’m much happier on my own. I can spend as much time with somebody as I want, but I’m not looking to be with someone forever or live with someone. I don’t want somebody in my house.”

Living alone, however, can sometimes lead to humorous mishaps. Earlier this year, Goldberg recounted an incident on The View where she accidentally ate cat treats, mistaking them for pretzels. “I got home. Perhaps I was a little more jet-lagged than I realised. I was not high. I had nothing to drink. It was 2 in the morning, and I was craving these wonderful pretzels called Dot’s Pretzels, which I love,” she explained. “My daughter decided to leave some cat treats on the other side of my bag, so at 2 a.m., you can imagine what happened — I reached over, poured some Dot’s into my hand, and popped them into my mouth. I thought, ‘These may be a little stale!’”

“When asked if I thought they were simply a new flavour, I replied, ‘No, not really. I just poured some more in because maybe I thought, you know, bed mouth — sometimes you wake up with something in your mouth and you’re like, “Who is this?”’”

“So, I poured some more. ‘Why do these taste so bad?’ My eyes finally opened a bit, and in my hand were the crab-flavoured Temptations!”
