In the world of music, die-hard fans of Weezer have always held a special place in their hearts for the band’s early years. Recently, a treasure trove of recordings from that era has been unearthed and is set to finally see the light of day. Weezer has unveiled “1192,” a collection of their earliest studio sessions, set to be released on limited edition vinyl for Record Store Day 2026 on April 18.
Taking its name from November 1992, when these recordings were first laid down, “1192” offers a glimpse into the band’s formative years. Founding bassist Matt Sharp stumbled upon this hidden gem while revisiting a collection of ‘lost-album’ master tapes from his personal archives. Among these tapes was a reel of analog tape containing Weezer’s very first studio sessions, instrumental in helping the band secure their record deal leading up to their iconic 1994 self-titled debut, often referred to as the Blue Album.
What sets “1192” apart is its lineup, featuring Weezer’s original members: the legendary Rivers Cuomo, drummer Patrick Wilson, bassist Matt Sharp, and guitarist Jason Cropper. This configuration may have been short-lived, but it played a pivotal role in shaping the band’s early sound. The recordings showcase early versions of songs that would go on to become staples of Weezer’s discography, such as “Say It Ain’t So,” “Undone (The Sweater Song),” “No One Else,” and “Surf Wax America.”
Approaching this project as a standalone release, Matt Sharp collaborated with producer Joe Chiccarelli to remix the recordings from tape to vinyl using an all-analog process. The work was completed at EastWest Studios in Los Angeles, a revered space that has hosted historic sessions by the likes of the Beach Boys and Frank Sinatra. The goal of this endeavor, as stated in the release notes, was to preserve the original essence and energy of the performances while paying tribute to the recording technology of the era.
The resulting album presents Weezer in a raw, unfiltered form, offering fans a new perspective on their beloved tracks. Multiple versions of certain songs are included, showcasing alternate vocal-and-guitar mixes and an acoustic rendition of “Undone,” providing insight into the evolution of these iconic tunes.
With only 3,000 copies of “1192” being pressed as a Record Store Day “RSD First” release, this exclusive vinyl will undoubtedly become a coveted collector’s item. Fans can get their hands on “1192” at participating independent record stores starting April 18, promising a nostalgic journey back to Weezer’s humble beginnings.
