Toxic Workplace Dynamics: Dental Nurse Awarded Compensation for Hostile Working Environment

A dental nurse, Maureen Howieson, has recently been awarded 25,000 in compensation following a tumultuous working relationship with colleague Jisna Iqbal at an Edinburgh clinic. The tribunal revealed that Howieson felt isolated and belittled by Iqbal’s rude behavior, which included eye-rolling and deliberate ignoring. Despite being moved to reception duties due to arthritis, Howieson still felt disrespected and undervalued in the workplace. The situation escalated when Iqbal refused to leave the reception area during Howieson’s shifts, adding further tension. Ultimately, a series of incidents, including being underpaid, led to Howieson resigning from her position.

Judge Ronald Mackay presided over the tribunal and criticized the dental clinic for failing to address Howieson’s complaints effectively. He described the lack of action as unacceptable and noted that the management’s inaction worsened the hostile working environment. The ruling concluded that Iqbal’s behavior breached workplace standards and directly contributed to Howieson’s distress, leading to the compensation award.
