The Shining

As readers of Goodreads cast their votes across a vast list of over 2,000 horror novels, one title emerged as the clear favorite: Stephen King’s “The Shining.” Published almost half a century ago, this classic novel earned more than 144,000 points from over 5,400 voters, solidifying its position as the top horror novel on the list. Interestingly, six of the top ten novels on the list are also penned by King, underscoring his enduring influence in the genre.

“The Shining” marked King’s third published novel and his first hardcover bestseller, cementing his status as a leading author in the horror genre. The story follows struggling writer and recovering alcoholic Jack Torrance as he takes on a caretaking job at the remote Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies, accompanied by his wife Wendy and their young son Danny, whose psychic abilities expose the hotel’s malevolent forces. Drawing on his personal experiences and struggles, King crafted a chilling tale of a family unraveling under the hotel’s sinister influence.

Rising above other timeless horror titles on the Goodreads list, “The Shining” is followed by King’s own “It” and “Salem’s Lot,” with classics like “Dracula” and “Frankenstein” also making the top ten. The enduring popularity of the novel is further underscored by the 1980 film adaptation directed by Stanley Kubrick, which was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry for its cultural significance. Starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, the film continues to be regarded as one of the scariest ever made, grossing $47 million at the box office.

Despite the film’s widespread acclaim, King himself has never been fond of Kubrick’s adaptation of his novel. He has criticized the film for its portrayal of Jack Torrance as already unhinged from the start, deviating from the character’s gradual descent into madness in the book. This disconnect between King’s vision and the film’s interpretation has sparked ongoing discussions and maintains the novel’s relevance nearly five decades after its publication.

In a sea of horror literature, “The Shining” remains a standout, captivating readers with its chilling portrayal of a family grappling with supernatural forces. King’s masterful storytelling and the enduring debate over the film adaptation continue to solidify the novel’s status as a timeless classic in the horror genre.
