As metal music continues to captivate fans with its diverse sub-genres and passionate following, the debate over which albums reign supreme remains a hot topic among enthusiasts. From heavy metal to hair metal, speed metal to thrash metal, the options are seemingly endless for metalheads to choose from.
Despite the vast array of metal albums available, it’s interesting to note that some of the best-selling records fall under the traditional heavy metal category. According to a poll conducted by Ranker to determine the top metal album of all time, it seems that classic records from this genre continue to hold a special place in fans’ hearts.
Dio’s groundbreaking 1983 debut album, “Holy Diver,” snagged the top spot on the list, marking the iconic singer Ronnie James Dio’s initial solo outing after his time with Black Sabbath. Following closely behind at number 9 was Iron Maiden’s 1983 release, “Piece of Mind,” which achieved platinum status in both the U.K. and North America. Notably, Iron Maiden’s fifth studio album, “Powerslave,” claimed the number 8 spot, showcasing the band’s enduring popularity within the metal scene.
Black Sabbath made a strong showing on the list, with their third studio album, “Master of Reality,” nabbing the 7th spot, while Megadeth secured the 6th spot with their hit album, “Rust in Peace.” The legendary band Black Sabbath returned to claim both the 5th and 4th spots with their eponymous debut album from 1970 and their second studio album, “Paranoid,” respectively. Metallica also made an impressive showing, grabbing the 3rd spot with “Ride the Lightning” and the 2nd spot with “Master of Puppets.”
At the pinnacle of the list stood Iron Maiden once again, this time with their classic 1982 album, “The Number of the Beast.” Not only did this album mark the debut of vocalist Bruce Dickinson and the final appearance of drummer Clive Burr, but it also featured iconic tracks like the title song and “Run to the Hills.” “The Number of the Beast” was a milestone for the band, reaching number 1 on the U.K. charts and breaking into the Billboard top 40.
In a genre filled with legendary albums and iconic bands, the enduring popularity of these classic metal records serves as a testament to the genre’s timeless appeal.
