The Legacy of the Grateful Dead: “Touch of Grey” and Beyond

As one of the most beloved rock bands in history, the Grateful Dead has a legacy that spans decades. Despite their widespread popularity, many newer fans may be surprised to learn that the band only had one song that came close to topping the charts. Released in 1987 on their album ‘In the Dark,’ “Touch of Grey” climbed to #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and secured the #1 spot on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. This was a significant achievement for a band that had previously peaked at #64 with their hit “Truckin'” in 1971.

The unexpected success of “Touch of Grey” came as both a blessing and a curse for the Grateful Dead. While the song launched them into mainstream popularity, it also brought with it a level of fame and demand that the band was not entirely prepared for. In a 2022 interview with Esquire, Dennis McNally, the Dead’s former publicist, revealed that Jerry Garcia’s reaction to the news of their chart success was less than enthusiastic, with Garcia reportedly saying, “I am appalled.”

The overwhelming demand for concert tickets following the success of “Touch of Grey” forced the Grateful Dead to transition from playing smaller venues to massive stadiums. This newfound level of fame presented logistical challenges for the band, including issues with parking and crowd control, as outlined by McNally in the interview.

Despite the challenges brought about by their unexpected hit, “Touch of Grey” became a defining anthem for the Grateful Dead and their dedicated fan base, known as Deadheads. The song took on added significance due to Garcia’s previous health struggles, including slipping into a diabetic coma in 1986. When Garcia returned to the stage months later, the band opened their first set at the Oakland Coliseum with “Touch of Grey,” sending a message of resilience and survival.

Decades later, “Touch of Grey” remains a powerful and inspiring song for countless fans. McNally described it as an excellent song, highlighting its lasting impact and enduring appeal. The song’s success serves as a reminder of the Grateful Dead’s lasting influence in the music industry and their ability to connect with listeners on a profound level.
