The Heartfelt Story of Merry Christmas Darling

The Christmas classic “Merry Christmas Darling” by The Carpenters has a touching backstory that adds a bittersweet layer to the holiday tune. Originally written in 1944 by Frank Pooler, the song conveys the emotions of missing someone during the festive season while yearning to be reunited with them. Despite being released by the sibling duo in November 1970, Karen and Richard Carpenter did not write the song themselves. It went on to become a certified gold record, with 500,000 units sold, and was later included in the 1978 compilation “Christmas Portrait.”

Pooler penned “Merry Christmas Darling” as a gift for a young woman he cared about when he was just 18. Unfortunately, their romance ended before he could present the song to her, leaving him heartbroken. Years later, as Choral Director at California State University, Long Beach, Pooler shared the song with Karen and Richard Carpenter. Richard reworked the melody, creating the Christmas classic that endures today.

Interestingly, the young woman whom Pooler wrote the song for was unaware of its origins until after it became a hit. They eventually met, leading to a heartfelt conversation about the beloved holiday tune. Pooler would go on to become the Carpenters’ orchestra director and remained close friends with both Karen and Richard Carpenter, even after Karen’s passing in 1983.

Surprisingly, Elvis Presley almost recorded “Merry Christmas Darling” in the early 1970s, following the Carpenters’ release of the song. However, his struggles with reading music posed a challenge during the recording process. Despite being surrounded by musicians who tried to assist him, Presley couldn’t quite master the song, leading him to abandon the recording after multiple attempts.

“Merry Christmas Darling” continues to be a beloved holiday standard, resonating with listeners 55 years after its initial release. Its timeless quality and emotional depth make it a poignant addition to the seasonal music catalogue, capturing the essence of longing and nostalgia during the festive period.
