As Sylvester Stallone sat transfixed at the championship match between Muhammad Ali and Chuck Wepner, an idea sparked in his mind. Within just three days, Stallone penned a script, his first ever, that would later become the beloved sports-action-drama film, Rocky.
While much of Stallone’s initial script was ultimately cut during significant rewrites, the core idea and essence of the story remained. Despite United Artists’ preference for a more established star to play the lead role in Rocky, Stallone stood firm in his desire to portray the titular character himself. He knew he couldn’t forgive himself if the film became a hit without him in the iconic role. Eventually, the studio relented and filming for Rocky commenced in January 1976.
Filming took place in and around Philadelphia, with certain elements of the story evolving throughout production. Originally, Stallone had written Rocky to throw the fight, rejecting the boxing world, resulting in a much darker storyline. Stallone also incorporated real-time dialogue that made its way into the final cut of the film.
Despite initial skepticism from some critics who labeled the movie as “gimmicky”, Rocky proved to be a box office sensation, with Stallone’s performance earning critical acclaim. Roger Ebert likened him to a “young Marlon Brando”, while Box Office Magazine hailed him as “a new star”. During awards season, Stallone received nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards for his work on Rocky.
Over the years, Rocky has cemented its status as a cinematic classic, even being preserved by the Library of Congress in 2006. Consistently lauded as one of the best films of all time, Rocky remains a must-watch for cinephiles.
Though the original three-day script may have seen significant changes before hitting the big screen, the enduring impact of Rocky is undeniable, making it a timeless and unforgettable piece of cinema.
